The Modimo Trilogy - Gala 2023 - Stanford Talisman
"The Modimo Trilogy" is comprised of three hymns originally performed by the Soweto Gospel Choir in South Africa; "Modimo" and "Ke Na Le Modisa" sung in Sotho, and "Izwi Lahlab'Inhliziyo Yami" in Zulu. The trilogy is religious, opening with “Modimo,” a song of wonder at creation, transitioning into "Izwi," a soulful confession of sin and proclamation of grace, and concluding with “Ke Na Le Modisa,” a traditional South African interpretation of Psalm 23.
In Talisman, we perform The Modimo Trilogy to celebrate a sense of gratitude. For most, if not all of us, it is the first song that called us to Talisman. In this journey of remembrance and history, we pay homage to our own roots, the start of the group of friends we are able to sing and spend time with and love.
Stanford Talisman is a student-led a cappella group at Stanford University dedicated to sharing stories through song. This has become our mantra as we strive to respectfully give voice to the vast collection of human stories told through rich and vibrant song. We appreciate the great challenge of responsibly engaging with the genuine roots of the songs we sing and are committed to bringing these songs to life as best as our abilities allow.

Duerme Pueblo Mio - Gala 2023 - Stanford Talisman
Переглядів 233Рік тому
"Duerme Pueblo Mio" translates to “Sleep My People”, and is a blend of two songs, “Cancion de Cuna” or “Lullaby”, and “Cuando Crezcas Pueblo Mio”, “When you grow my people”. These songs were written during Nicaragua’s Sandinista Revolution, which took place in response to a 40-year-old, US-backed dictatorship that left the majority Nicaraguans in poverty. Despite its context, this song is hopef...
Hard Time Killing Floor Blues - Gala 2023 - Stanford Talisman
Переглядів 163Рік тому
"Hard Time Killing Floor Blues" was written by Black artist Skip James in the Great Depression era of 1931. Despite its writing in 1931, it did not gain recognition until 1964, when many white artists spearheaded a "blues revival" that scoured the South to “rediscover” Black artists' music. The man who rediscovered James once even stated that he "bought Skip James for $200". This song depicts t...
Baba Yetu - Gala 2023 - Stanford Talisman
Переглядів 467Рік тому
Directly translated, "Baba Yetu" means "Our Father" in Swahili, and is a rendition of the Lord's Prayer. Talisman sings this song as a lullaby, giving thanks and seeking guidance as one day ends and another begins. Lyrics (Swahili) and translation (English): Baba yetu, (Our Father) uliye huko juu mbinguni, (who art in heaven) jina lako litukuzwe, milele na milele (Hallowed be thy name, for ever...
Deep River - Gala 2023 - Stanford Talisman
Переглядів 262Рік тому
"Deep River" is a triptych of the African American spiritual "Deep River" and the gospel songs "I Know I've Been Changed" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water". The song is centered around a longing for the freedom found across the Jordan river, and spiritual transformation. The true beauty of this piece lies in its transitions, overlaps, and apexes: the crossing-over of Earth and heaven, song and p...
Matthew - Gala 2023 - Stanford Talisman
Переглядів 93Рік тому
"Matthew" vividly describes the story of its namesake, Matthew Shepard, a gay man who was murdered by two men in Laramie, Wyoming in 1998. Matthew was a lot like those of us on the stage: he was 21 years old, he was finishing his first year in college, a political science major. Matthew was also gay, and being queer trapped Matthew within the structures that continue to prey on queer youth to t...

In a dramatic shift from minor to major, it illustrates how love alleviates suffering. Tai Yang - Gala 2023 - Stanford Talisman
Переглядів 110Рік тому
Perhaps our deepest and most thoroughly human memories are created by motherly love in the many forms it manifests. "Tai Yang," also known as 小小羊儿要回家, or “the little sheep are coming home,” is a traditional lullaby sung in Mandarin Chinese from a mother’s point of view. She tells us through the lyrics how she loves all her children despite their differences and that she promises to keep them sa...
Wanting Memories - Gala 2023 - Stanford Talisman
Переглядів 236Рік тому
In "Wanting Memories", we transition from a portrait of returning loved ones to a portrait of lost loved ones. This illustration of the arduous journey of grief, from the heavy permanence of loss to the catharsis of acceptance, is carved with painstaking detail. Here, memories, much like music itself, are at once the source of unbearable pain and joyous reminiscence. Over the course of the song...

"Shosholoza" originally came from Zimbabwe. It was brought to South Africa by migrants who worked in the South African mines for small wages under terrible conditions far from their families. The song was used to lift their spirits and unite them. It's now very popular in South Africa and is referred to as their second anthem.Talisman's arrangement is based on a version by the Soweto Gospel Choir.
Going Home - Stanford Talisman Spring Show 2021

Going Home tells the story of the Tuscarora Tribe's exile from their native land in what is now North Carolina, and their longing for return. It is a song of urgent remembrance, conjuring the peculiar of violence that is American history -genocide, slavery, amnesia- reminding us that the blues we claim first came from "stolen people on stolen lands". Going Home is written by Pura Fé, an Indigen...

It's always so interesting to watch foreigners singing my native language, you do a really good job :) It's quite a complex interpretation and a lot of effort has been put in the arrangement but to the point that the original source becomes irrelevant. One starts to wonder "Why did they take Kaval sviri?". The main thing about a choir singing Bulgarian folklore is no rhythmic movement. You can only move just slightly as per the requirements of the current note being sung (not rhythmically), in the rest of the time you can move ... your eyes, mostly. And musically, rhythmically... well I get it that it's difficult.

Let the mom & pop stores continue to support their communities. Don't allow the Capitalistic capture of our voted officials to be bought and captured by money. They will make laws to take over and put them to death.

Thank you so very much Stanford Talisman choir in sharing South Africa's musical heritage as expressed in words and music by one of our greatest talents! It takes some guts to attempt this version of music given the cultural and linguistic differences - you have done an awesome job, your singing is tuneful, rhythmic, melodic and all the adjectives one can use to describe an excellent effort. This has been an eye-opener for me, you're an amazing group of singers.
